🎬 Toxic: A Stylized Mess That Ultimately Misses the Mark
I went to watch Toxic yesterday & despite the massive hype surrounding it—promising a gritty, wild ride into the life of a Goa-based gangster—the film unfortunately falls flat. Directed by Geetu Mohandas and starring Yash alongside Tara Sutaria, Huma Qureshi, and Kiara Advani, the movie prioritizes style over substance, resulting in an emotionally hollow and exhausting cinematic experience.
Here is why I did not like this movie.
📉 Where It All Goes Wrong
- A Chaotic and Exhausting Screenplay: Clocking in at a massive 3 hours and 15 minutes, the pacing is a disaster. The first 30 minutes are so rushed with erratic cuts that you barely have time to grasp the plot before new elements are shoved onto the screen. It feels less like a cohesive story and more like a checklist of scenes.
- Zero Emotional Connection: Because the narrative is so disjointed, it is impossible to connect with Raya (Yash) or any of the supporting characters. By the time the film reaches its intended "emotional payoffs," I was completely detached.
- The Second-Half Collapse: While the first half is barely passable, the second half completely implodes under its own weight. The film drags on endlessly, diluting whatever solid core concept the creators initially had in mind.
- Atrocious Hindi Dubbing: The Hindi dialogue is agonizing to listen to. Instead of normal conversational dialogue, characters speak in archaic, poetic riddles reminiscent of bad 80s Bollywood movies.
- Subpar VFX: For a movie heavily reliant on visual flair, the CGI is noticeably poor, especially during the car chase sequences which look completely artificial.
🌟 The Few Redeeming Qualities (That Couldn't Save It)
To be fair, the movie isn't entirely without merit, though these elements aren't enough to rescue the film:
- Yash’s Performance: Yash delivers a genuinely great performance. He perfectly captures the different phases of Raya’s life, effortlessly transitioning from a mischievous youth to a deeply angry, toxic gangster.
- Stunning Action Choreography: When the movie stops trying to tell a story and just lets Yash fight, it shines. The hand-to-hand combat sequences—especially the circus scene—are visually spectacular, backed by excellent, synchronized orchestral background scores.
- Cinematography: There are flashes of brilliance in the camerawork, particularly the neon-lit sequences and stylized tracking shots that highlight the character's aura.
🎬 The Final Verdict
Rating: Skip It ❌
Toxic suffers from a classic case of having a great initial concept but completely botching the execution. The director focused so heavily on making the film look "cool" and accessorizing the protagonist that the actual storytelling was left in the dust.
If you are a die-hard Yash fan, you might enjoy his on-screen presence and the action set-pieces. But for me, the dreadful pacing, lack of emotional depth, and terrible dialogue made this a thoroughly disappointing and tedious watch.
